What is klesekreis?

Klesekreis is a linguistics reading group for young linguists and anyone who’s interested. We do not subscribe to any particular subfield or theory. Instead, we read whatever we find interesting and fascinating to keep up a lively debate. Interested? Just come to one of our meetings and/or shoot us a quick email. All infos below.

Everyone is welcome!

2023 klesekreis theme: Looking for heritage (languages)

This year’s theme is heritage languages, speakers and signers.

Why? Because we live in a world where multilinguals are the majority, even though monolinguals have often informed us in our researchers. Let’s try to flip this by focussing at multilinguals. We can focus on any topic that broadly relates to multilingualism, but the aim is also to spotlight anything around heritage X. More specifically, research about heritage speakers and signers provides insights into the developments of at least two languages that are often in an unbalanced relation as often there is one (or more) majority socially dominant language and one (or more) minority language at the speakers or signers repertoire. That is why I suggest to set this widespread social construct of a group as our 2023 theme.

But really, the reason is simply that I, Onur, couldn’t find the capacities to continue to host the super broad range of topics that we previously had at the klesekreis. Instead, this new klesekreis theme will be relevant to many people that I work with already and I hope they attend reguarily. And anyone else who finds interest in these topics is also cordially invited to join and discuss with us.
